Memorial Weekend Trip
We drove up to the northeast part of the state.
High temperatures were predicted to be in the mid 60's.
The temperatures ranged in the mid 40's all day and the sky was overcast.
At least there were no mosquitoes while we planted the geraniums.
We stopped to see Uncle Walter on our way home.
Preparations were under way for a 'welcome summer' party.
First on the list: heat the water in the pool.
The temperature of the water had been 70 degrees,
but two days of cooler weather dropped the temperature back into the upper 60's.
Brrrrr.....
The party participants had set their tents up the night before.
The puppies were hoping for a hand-out.

Freedom Is Not Free
I heard the sound of Taps one night, when everything was still.
I listened to the bugler play and felt a sudden chill.
I wondered just how many times that Taps had meant "Amen".
When a flag had draped a coffin of a brother or a friend.
I thought of all the children, of the mothers and the wives,
Of Fathers, sons and husbands, with interrupted lives.
I thought about a graveyard at the bottom of the sea,
Of unmarked graves in Arlington. No, Freedom is not free!

Mother's Day - Part II
We met the not-so-little people and their parents at General Butler State Park for a Mother's Day brunch at the Two Rivers Restaurant.
We had a delicious selection of mashed potatoes, turkey/gravy,
roast beef/gravy, assorted steamed vegetables, vegetable/fruit salads,
sliced ham with assorted cheeses,
rolls and corn meal muffins,
assorted cakes and
ice cream.
All yummy!
Opening Mother's Day presents.
The little 'helper'.
Well, we all need a little help now and then.

We went to the playground.
We took a walk up to the Butler Family Cemetery.
The children walked along the fence surrounding the cemetery.
Noah found a four-leaf clover.

The Butler-Turpin State Historic House was closed.
We walked around, talking about the unattached kitchen,
the vegetable garden and the flowers.
K.K. found some wild strawberries that she shared.

Happy Mother's Day
We did some shopping this morning at Ohio's only REI store.
We were looking for a new thermarest pad for under my sleeping bag.
Bought that, a new water bottle and bike pump for on my bicycle.
Stopped at a local bike shop and bought a new pair of Shimano bike shoes.
When we got home, there were Mother's Day flowers on the front porch
from Christine and Bob.
Happy Mother's Day!
Hope you have a fun Mother's Day, too!

Rain, Rain, Go Away
The garden is finally plowed.
During the first ten days of May, we have had 2.74 inches of rain. The normal month to date rainfall is 1.41 inches.
We had a downpour this afternoon that is not included in the 2.74 inches.
Friday's downpour brought an additional 1.13 inches of rain.
New totals: month to date - 3.87 inches; normal month to date - 1.57 inches.
The irises are enjoying the rain
as is the spirea.

Two young men stopped by one afternoon with an offer to cut down a dead tree
in the yard. An offer that couldn't be resisted.
There are wires close by, so the felling of the tree would be tricky.
One young man cut, the John Deere was ready to pull it over.
The last log was rolled onto the 'stone boat' and dragged out back.
