Thursday: Berchtesgaden

Near Berchtesgaden, was the mountaintop home of Adolf Hitler.

In the background is the entrance to Hitler's "Eagle's Nest." This was a 50th birthday present to Hitler from Martin Goering in 1938. The walls were made of granite and were two meters thick. Each block was numbered to go into a specific spot.
Hitler went to the "Eagle's Nest" a total of fourteen times for meetings. Hitler's chauffeur drove him into the tunnel, dropped him off at the elevator; backed the car out of the tunnel; then backed the car into the tunnel to pick Hitler up at the conclusion of his meeting. The tunnel has a 3% grade and is about a quarter of a mile long.
Hitler was claustrophobic. The elevator, which was a good size any way, was made of polished brass to make it seem even larger.

We were very fortunate to be there on such a clear day.

We returned to our hotel

and rented bicycles. We rode along the bicycle path beside the river to 'old town'.

An adventure, to be sure...
