We took a little ride on our bicycles this afternoon.
With temperatures in the mid sixties, partly sunny skies and the wind blowing out of the north, north-west, it was a pretty fun ride. On our route is Grassland-Grange Grassfed Beef . Today, there was an open house with free burgers, drinks, chips and cookies. Hay rides and 'meet and greet' with JACK, the miniature donkey. And me without my camera!
We did enjoy chatting with folks there that we knew, plus the hamburgers were quite tasty!
Wishing all the mothers a very happy Mother's Day! As it happens, this is also the weekend of the 47th annual Tour of the Scioto River Valley; a two day, 200 mile bicycle ride from Columbus to Portsmouth and back. Saturday, the temperatures were in the high 60's/low 70's; an almost perfect day to ride. Today, Sunday, for the trip back to Columbus, a strong wind is whipping around from the south/southeast and periodically there are downpours accompanied by thunder... yes, ideal TOSRV weather!
We rode TOSRV for a number of years. We 'enjoyed' riding in the rain, sun and wind along with assorted storms. Occasionally, we did have pleasant weather. Many years ago, four of us were eating breakfast Saturday morning in Columbus. One of the men said to me, "Do you ride?" I replied, "Yes, some." It was a beautiful day; we were at Lake White, the third rest stop, fairly early. The same men with whom we had eaten breakfast were also there. The one man turned to me with a surprised look in his eyes and said, "How did you get here?" I replied, "Just like you; I rode my bike!" Put a smile on my face!
Happy Mother's Day!
We met the grandchildren and their parents at General Butler State Park Resort for an elaborate luncheon buffet. As well as for the traditional exchange of presents and cards. We spent a good hour at the Conference Center sampling assorted food items. I think we all ate our share!
Afterwards, the grandchildren did a little Summer shopping at the Carrollton Outlet Mall! Noah chose a 'light-up' Spider Man shirt and K.K. chose new dresses. We would have liked to peruse the Kentucky Scottish Festival at G.B.S.P.R., but the constant rain sent all the participants home. We'll try again next year!
K.K. was born on the first Saturday in May, the Kentucky Derby. Her parents treat her each year with a birthday/derby party by inviting family and friends. John has just returned from a successful two day engine test in Houston and needs a little 'down' time. We will wish K.K. happy birthday Sunday, her real birthday. So, this morning, I asked, "What would you like for your derby dinner?" John replied, "How about a Kentucky Hot Brown?" Thank goodness for 'Google'! A hot brown is an open-faced sandwich with layers of turkey and ham on a piece of toast, covered with a cheese sauce; baked in a small casserole dish; with bacon strips and sliced (or diced) tomatoes along side. Of course, there are as many recipes for a Kentucky Hot Brown as there are horses running in the derby. I chose a recipe for which I had most of the ingredients. And, best of all, the recipe was submitted by Claudia Sanders, wife of the Colonel. It has to be good, right?
The recipe for the hot brown called for a small amount of cheese sauce between each of the layers. Next time, I'll put the slice of tomato on top before baking... and, maybe, I'll put on the bacon... It was pretty tasty. Different.
Go Colonel John!
