Florida Freewheelers Bicycle Safari

Bicycle riding is second only to the food prepared by the Dixie Grill for participants of the annual Florida Freewheelers Bicycle Safari. The rides on Saturday and Sunday are in the Live Oak area.

We tented under the canopy of the rodeo stadium at the Suwannee County Fairgrounds. We had temperatures in the mid-seventies for both days of riding. Monday, we moved our camp to Cherry Lake Campgrounds.

Cherry Lake Campgrounds is a beautiful 4-H campground.

Tents as far as the eye can see... The dining hall is in the background of the picture on the right.

We have pitched our tent and taken a short ride (24 miles round trip) to the near-by town of Madison for a delicious lunch at Food for Thought.

This week Madison is celebrating the four freedoms as stated by President Franklin D. Roosevelt on January 6, 1941.

This memorial symbolizes the four freedoms: freedom of speech and expression, freedom of worship, freedom from want and freedom from fear.

Wednesday evening celebrations include ribs, ice-cream sundaes and the band Just in Case. Yes, and beer.

In the left picture, the ten year old son of one of the band members did a 'bang-up' job on the drums.

The food line: will there be anything left for me?

Friends enjoying the festivities.

Museum of Aviation

On our way to the annual Florida Freewheelers Bicycle Safari, we stopped in Macon, Georgia to visit the Museum of Aviation, Flight and Technology Center, located at the Warner Robins Air Force Base.

Robins Air Force Base has the second largest museum in the United States Air Force. The museum displays 93 aircraft on a 51 acre site.

Four buildings surround the ampitheater: The Eagle Building, Hangar One, The Heritage Building and The Century of Flight Hangar. A World War II Hangar is under construction. Later in the morning, a group of students 'test fired' their rockets from the launch pad in front of the ampitheater.

We were most interested in the replica of the 1912 Epps monoplane. No mention was made of Orville and Wilber...

Also of interest was the steam aviation engine.

The price was right and there were a lot of interesting displays.

Spring Opener 2007

This year's Spring Opener bicycle ride started in a new location.

We arrived about 7:15 a.m. The temperature was in the low 40's and the promised rain was falling.

Food and registration areas are arranged.

We now wait for some customers...

Rain is still falling.

The long awaited arrival of a couple of hardy riders. Although the rain has almost stopped, the temperature remains in the low 40's.

Riders enjoyed hot chocolate and chicken noodle soup upon their return.

Five hardy riders braved the cold, rainy weather. One rode the 52 mile route; one, the 22 mile route and three rode the shorter 9 mile route. Next year, we hope to have better weather...

Visits...

I had an opportunity earlier this week to visit with the Little People. 'Play is a child's work.' I'm sure I read that somewhere.

Friday was warm and sunny. We walked to the new school that will be built down the road from us.

The site is mostly mud and construction equipment.

The property is in the shape of the letter 'T'. The school building will be at the back of the property, on the right side of the 'T', at the top of the hill. Can you see the houses in the background?

This is the left side of the 'T' where the playground and ball fields will be. This picture was taken facing the road. The base of the 'T' is the entrance to the school.

This might be a good place for a bike path to the adjoining neighborhood.

A basket of bright yellow pansies as a thank you.

Happy Easter, Happy Spring!

What is there to say? Last Tuesday, I was happily riding my bike in shorts and a jersey. Then, the temperature dropped 40 degrees, and snow fell... So much for Global warming!

We woke Saturday morning to actual snow on the ground!

The irises seem to have survived the cold and snow.

Other than the cold and overcast skies, we had a nice Easter.
Happy Easter to you! Happy Spring!
